AN EFFECTIVE HAIR REMOVER?

Sugar waxing is a method of hair removal that removes the hair from the root. Sugar Wax is applied to the part of body you want to remove hair and it is pulled off ,taking the hair along. Sugarwax is made from only three ingredients: water, sugar and lemon.

Is Sugarwax the only method of hair removal? Absolutely not! The practice of removing hair has been in existence for ages and different practices and methods have come into play and evolved overtime. In Nigeria though, the need to have hair free skin is a relatively new phenomenon that I believe came after the last era of bleaching wave and into the new era(yes, because skin bleaching is still a epidemic among us. Watch for my post about skin bleaching). Hair on  your body shades you skin at least a tone darker, especially if you don’t have light hairs. Some just prefer the feel of a smooth skin or just find it irritating or personally unhygienic. Whatever your reason, hair removal is becoming quite common place now especially in metropolitan towns here in Nigeria .

First. Let’s torch on some of the hair removal methods most commonly practiced that doesn’t involve any machinery or mechanical device.

There are:

  • Shaving
  • Threading
  • Hair removal cream
  • Waxing
  • Sugarwax

SHAVING is the use of a razor stick to scrape hair off the skin. This method does not remove hairs from the roots but cuts it off from the surface. It can be used on any part of the body but it also causes nicks and cut on the skin. It is also found to cause bulbs and irritations on the skin especially around the pubic area and underarm.  You might also have to repeat every week cause the hair grows back fast. I’ll say this is the hair removal practice almost all of us grew up on in Nigeria.

THREADING like the name implies is literally the use of thread to remove hair. This is still not a common practice in Nigeria.  The only instances where I have seen Threading used was for carving the eyebrows. Its advantage is that it can focus on removing select hair in a given area while it leaves the rest. This is what makes it a great method for eyebrow shaping. Due to its technique though, it won’t work well for a large body part like legs or arm and it is must be done by a professional.

HAIR REMOVAL CREAM is the application of a cream on your skin and what the cream does is break down the structure of keratin; the main protein in your hair to weaken and dissolve the hair. It might affect your skin if left for too long as the top layer of your skin also contains keratin. You also cannot ascertain the reaction to your skin as it contains varying chemicals depending on brand. It can cause irritations and bumps, has a nasty smell and isn’t suitable for all body parts(like seriously  ladies, who wants to apply chemicals in their coochie?). Also isn’t long lasting and you might have to repeat as often as when shaving. Don’t even lie, this was the other hair removal option we grew up with in Naija(for my millennial and before).

WAXING involves using a sticky wax that is applied to the skin and ripped off quickly. There are different types of waxing, like hard wax and soft wax. Both types are basically the same in that wax pebbles are melted in a pot, applied to desired area for hair removal and pull off all at once. For hot wax, the wax is applied in a thin layer and a strip of cloth is laid on  the wax and pulled off. Hard wax on the other hand is laid a bit thicker, allowed to cool and harden then pulled off. Waxing is often considered more painful because it pulls off the hair in one go. It can also cause burns as the wax is melted and warm during application. Can cause ingrowth hair and  hair must grow to a particular length to be effective. It is also long lasting.

SUGARWAX OR SUGARING (also called Halawa in northern Nigeria which means candy) involves using a paste made from sugar and lemon juice; two ingredients found in your kitchen. Sugaring is less painful because it removes the hair strand by strand or in smaller sections. This way the pain can be regulated although the process can last longer.

How Does Sugaring Work?

Sugaring is a newer method of hair removal that originated in North America. In Nigeria,  it was mainly popularized by the North with the commercialization of the ‘gyaran  jiki’ or ‘kumshi’ customs done for a Hausa bride before the ‘daurin aure’.It also uses a sticky substance called sugar paste or sugar wax, typically manipulated by hand (though DIY kits are now available which uses strips) to pull out the hairs.

Sugar waxing is a popular hair removal method that is used by both men and women. Sugar waxing is the process of removing unwanted hair from the body with a mixture of sugar, water, and lemon juice.

Benefits of Sugarwaxing

There are many benefits to using sugar wax for hair removal. The first benefit of sugar waxing is that it’s a natural product and isn’t likely to irritate your skin like other methods like shaving or depilatory creams do.

Another great benefit to using sugar wax for hair removal is that it doesn’t leave any kind of residue on your skin after you remove the hairs. It is 100% water soluble so all you need after a wax session is to rinse off skin with water.

Sugarwaxing also doesn’t just remove hair from its roots, it also exfoliates the skin, stripping off dead skin and leaving your skin smooth. Have you felt that your skincare products just don’t work any more? A sugar wax session, is the kick-start you need.(look out for our article on how to use sugar waxing to optimize your skincare routine)

After sugaring,  you are left with an immediate smoother and clearer skin.

Sugar waxing lasts a long time depending on how fast your hair grows. It can last anywhere from 4-8weeks before you need another session.

Your hair subsequently grows out lighter, softer and scantier. After a few sessions, it begins to slow your hair growth leading to longer time between sessions.

Sugar wax can also be used on every part of the body including a full Brazilian.

Sugaring can be less painful because

  • It doesn’t stick to the skin.
  • It is manipulated by hand so the temperature is regulated by the professional.
  • Skin surface is covered in small spaces, thereby pacing the client.
  • No ripping action takes place when the hair is removed.

The most common questions about Sugarwaxing are:

What does it feel like? How long does it last? And will it work on my type of skin?

Sugar waxing is one of the most popular types of hair removal today. It is considered as an inexpensive and effective way to remove unwanted hair.

Sugar wax is a great way to remove hair with minimal pain. It is also a great alternative to other methods of hair removal because it doesn’t irritate the skin as much.

If you are new to using sugar wax ,then expect to feel some pain. These pain defers according to every individual’s threshold, the professional yielding the wax and also the shock factor for first timers. The pain can be managed by covering smaller spaces at a time, pacing your self so you can take breathers and waxing in a conducive, very cool room. All in all, I promise you! The first time is always the worse. It never gets more or even as painful as the first time(do I have a witness!). It takes 2weeks a minimum for those with fast growing hair to see new sprouts and 4-8 weeks before you  need another session. Some have lasted up to 12 weeks. Imagine having a Brazilian and underarm sugarwax and not needing another for the next 2 months! And most amazing of all, sugarwax works for every skin type. Black/melanin,white/Caucasian,colored,bleached,toned! Sugar wax is a gift that keeps on  giving without discrimination or bias. Be sure to tell your consultant of any sensitivity, concerns,  reactions and/or allergies you might have. Though sugarwax is all natural,  every body is different and people have been know to breakout after a wax session. After learning about the glorious wonder sugarwax can do for your skin.
